Every fall, Smithfield-Selma’s Spartan Regiment takes to the field in competitions and home football games. The Spartan Regiment’s season begins in August and the season doesn’t conclude until the last parade is marched in December. Marching band is offered as a class at Smithfield-Selma High, but the Spartan Regiment is much more than a class. It is five months of dedication to a program much bigger than an individual.
The program focuses on both musical and visual aspects of marching band but its rewards go much further than the trophies that line the band room walls. Character and determination are qualities instilled in all members of the Spartan Regiment and the experiences the marching band has to offer goes much farther than four years of high school. The Spartan Regiment teaches students to become stronger in ability as well as character.
